Facilities
Location and surroundings
Besides the typical Frisian lakes and meadows, exceptional forests and heathlands can also be found here. The largest heathland area in Friesland is the Duurswouderheide. This area is home to Bronze Age burial mounds as well as lakes. These are no ordinary lakes but pingo ruins, formed during the ice age. An extraordinary nature area to walk through. The Frisian Woods nature reserve is also highly recommended: here you can spot birds undisturbed and the area also has an interesting archaeological walking route. For a day of shopping or culture, you can visit Drachten or Heerenveen from Houtigehage. Leeuwarden or Groningen are also great for a day out.
